District Governor 2015-16

Lion Marvin O. Grant was born on the 8th June 1971 under the astrological sign of Gemini, in Guyana, the beautiful land of many waters.

There he obtained his formal education. Upon graduating from high school he worked for short stints as a Store-keeper and a Bank Clerk, but his passion was for the medical sciences, thus he applied to the Medical Technology Program at the University of Guyana. In 1994, Lion Marvin received his diploma in Medical Technology with a concentration in Hematology, and in 1997 an associate’s degree in the same field with a distinction in Microbiology.

His career as a Medical Technologist spans over two decades during which he was employed with the Government of Guyana, at the Georgetown Public Hospital Laboratory 1994 – 1997; Laboratory supervisor at the Fitz St. Rose Medical Centre, St. Lucia1997 – 2000; and senior tech/laboratory supervisor at Medicure Ltd. in the BVI, 2000 to present.

Through the years Lion Marvin honed his skills as a technologist by participating in several training workshops hosted by the Caribbean Epidemiology Center (CAREC), Pan American Health (PHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

His desire to expand his intellectual repertoire also led him to enroll in the, “The Clinical Management of HIV” and “Global Leadership” courses with Washington State University and a HIV/Aids Stigma & Discrimination course with the USAID Global Health E-Learning Center in 2012.

Armed with this knowledge Lion Marvin has done a great deal of work in this field with the BVI National HIV/AIDS Program and the HIV/Aids Foundation BVI Ltd. He served as chairman of the foundation from 2012 to 2014 and still volunteers his time as a counselor & tester when time permits.

His yearning for service and leadership development led him to becoming a member of the Sought Georgetown Junior Chambers Association in early 1997; his stint as a Jaycee was short lived due to migration for occupational reasons.

His introduction to Lionism was kind of unique. It was at work in 2002 that he was invited to a Tortola Lions Club meeting by the late Lion Theodore Skeete MJF, LM and Past Region Chairman, who just after having had his blood drawn, a process he hated with a passion still thought it necessary to promote this organization. Later that year he was inducted into the Lions Club of Tortola.

At club level he has served in all positions except that of Treasurer, Tail Twister & Leo Advisor.
At District level he has served as: District Chairman and Associate; Zone Chairman- 2009-10; Region 2 Chairman 2010-11.

Lion Marvin has received many awards to date. Among these are club Lion of the Year (three times), a Key award and the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellow Award. He is a proud graduate of the 2012 regional Lions Leadership Institute.

Lion Marvin has attended a number of zone, region, multiple districts and two international conventions to date.
Other areas of service, interest and achievement include:

  • President of the Association of Guyanese Living in the BVI from March, 2012 to present.
  • Volunteer in the BVI Reading Council’s “Dad Reach Out and Read” program
  • Founding member and assistant secretary of the Caribbean Association of Medical Technologist (CASMET) St. Lucia Branch.
  • Second Vice-Chairman on the BVI Humanitarian Relief Consortium

His hobbies are dancing, listening to music, karaoke (carrying his own keys), sports, traveling and photography.
Lion Marvin considers himself very blessed, for his lovely wife Michelle and five children are very patient and understanding when it comes to his work as a Lion; for this he thanks them and remains forever grateful.
